Taking up the role of Chair of the local board

This month marked the halfway point of the three-year Council term. At the beginning of the term, members decided to split the term with a different Chair/Deputy Chair for each. It's been a really exciting time getting stuck in, with some big opportunities in early May for the local board to represent your views on the Long Term Plan (10-year budget).

Gary Brown who was Chair of the board previously will stay on as Deputy Chair. I'm looking forward to working with him for the remainder of the term.

Murrays Bay boat ramp renewal

This email is to notify you that works will commence shortly at Murrays Bay Beach Reserve – renewal of existing boat ramp. The work will be completed between Monday 6th of May 2024 and Friday 17th of May 2024, weather dependant. The scope is to renew the boat ramp with additional side aprons, and depth to add resilience. The immediate area will be isolated and inaccessible for the duration of the project. Beach access will need to be obtained at other points along the beach.

One Nudge: New community parenting support centre in Orewa

It was such a pleasure to be part of the official opening of One Nudge in Orewa last weekend.

One Nudge is all about strengthening families in our community. For over five years, they've engaged in diverse outreach efforts, aiming to support those in need. Now, with a dedicated space (21 Tamariki Ave, Orewa) they offer ongoing courses, coffee group, and practical help, believing that essential support and nurturing environments can make a profound difference for parents and caregivers.

I've visited a couple of times now and it's such a wonderful space for parents to connect with others and seek help. One Nudge covers the community and education elements through a number of initiatives led by them or by hosting others:

  • Coffee group - Thursday's 10-12 (featuring a masseuse, a coffee machine, home baking and connecting with other parents - best coffee group in town!)

  • Space group - facilitated programme by a trained professional over 20-30 weeks for new parents to guide you through stages with your baby.

  • Parenting courses - covering preschool, primary or teenage years.

  • Man Alive - support service promoting positive models of manhood, healthy behaviours and respectful loving relationships.

  • Willow Psychosensory Therapy - run by two registered midwives passionate about helping women who have experienced trauma, fear, and grief associated with pregnancy and childbirth.

Bays Community Housing Trust: New quality social housing opens up in Torbay

It was really special to celebrate the opening of Bays Community Housing Trust's latest development in Torbay.

BCHT are a group of passionate local people committed to providing quality, affordable housing on the North Shore for people who need it. They started back in 2004 in affiliation with Long Bay Baptist Church. Their aim is to provide more than just the basic need of housing. They value healthy communities and social inclusion, and strive to help their tenants become empowered and gain the confidence to be independent.

You might be familiar with their other completed housing projects on Glenvar Road (in front of the church) or the more unique project they did on Tonar Street catering for women over 65yo.

One of the most enjoyable parts of my Local Board role is getting to know the incredible people who give their time, money, and expertise to help make our area such a fantastic place to live. Thank you so much to John, Gordon and all the team at BCHT for the impressive projects you are undertaking and the wrap-around support you're providing to those who need a hand up.
